PLEA 2016 was held at the CADAL headquarters from 6 April to 1 June. This was an educational program for young students and recent college graduates where political, economic and social issues in Latin America were discussed.
During the first session on Wednesday, April 6, Jorge Streb examined "The performance of Latin American in the 2016 Transformation Index" . Streb has a BSc in Economics from Universidad de Buenos Aires, and a Ph.D. in Economics from U.C. Berkeley, is a Director of Research and a Professor of Economics and Political Science at Universidad del Cema. He is also an academic advisor for CADAL.
In the second session on Wednesday, April 13, Gabriel Salvia spoke on "The challenges to democratic consolidation in Latin America". Salvia is the Chairman of the Center for the Opening and the Development of Latin America (CADAL). He is a journalist and human rights activist . His articles are regularly published in El País (Spain), La Nación (Argentina) and Latin America Goes Global (United States).
In the third session, on Wednesday, April 20, Luis Maria Palma talked about "The challenges of Justice in Latin America . Their relations with the political power." Palma is a lawyer and Doctor of Political Science. He is the President of E-Justicia Latinoamérica , Dean of the Faculty of Graduate Studies (UB) and Director of Centro de Estudios sobre la Justicia -CEJUS (Faculty of Law, Universidad de Buenos Aires –UBA-).
In the fourth session held on Wednesday 27 April, Leandro Querido spoke on "Elections in Latin America: about change and continuity " . Querido holds a BA in Political Science (UBA), Professor at the Faculty of Social Sciences of the UBA and specialist in Latin American Electoral Systems and Electoral Observation. He heads the NGO Transparencia Electoral y el portal Noticias Electorales de América Latina.
During the fifth session which took place on Wednesday, May 4, Ruth Diamint gave a presentation on "Peace, democracy and regional security in Latin America." Diamint is a professor at the Universidad Torcuato Di Tella and a researcher at Consejo Nacional de Investigaciones Científicas y Tecnológicas, CONICET. She is an Advisor to Club de Madrid and member of the Advisory Board of the UN Secretary General on Disarmament Matters.
In the sixth session, on Wednesday, May 11, Ignacio Labaqui talked on "The end of the left turn in Latin America." Labaqui graduated with a MSc in Sociology from the London School of Economics and Political Science, has a bachelor's degree in Political Science from UCA, and is a Professor at the Faculty of Social Sciences in UCA.
On Wednesday, May 18, in the six session Sybil Rhodes spoke on "Migration Policies in Latin America." Rhodes has a Ph.D. and MA. in Political Science from Stanford University; and a degree in Latin American Studies from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She is the Director of the Masters in International Studies at Universidad del CEMA and Vice President of CADAL.
In the last session, on Wednesday, June 1, Martin Almeida led a discussion on the book by José Ignacio García Hamilton "El autoritarismo hispanoamericano y la improductividad". Almeida is a lawyer (UBA ) and has a PhD in Political Science from (UB). He is a former assistant Professor of José Ignacio García Hamilton at UBA and Universidad de Palermo. Ex - Professor of Civil Law at UCA.
