No place in the Czech Republic bears the mark of the Holocaust as deeply as Terezín. A lone traveller walks through its streets, encountering local residents who prefer to leave the past behind; after all, it was “only four years”. Yet as the former ghetto fades from memory, forgetting has done little to revitalise the town. Why has Terezín become a ghost town? And to what extent does its desolate present reflect our broader relationship with Jewish history and memory?

Viktor Portel is the director and producer of the documentary Mezi příkopy a valy (Between the Ditches and the Walls), which runs for 38 minutes and premiered in 2024. For his film Havel’s Heart, he won first prize at the Czech Press Photo Awards in the Current Affairs and Online Reportage category. His first feature-length documentary, The Investigator, premiered internationally at the FIPADOC festival.
