Progressive liberalism in Latin America: Democratic governance, economic growth and social inclusion

At San Martin Auditorium of Bolsa de Cereales de Buenos Aires, CADAL organized the 2011 edition of Foro Latino Global, with Sérgio Fausto (Brazil), Patricio Navia (Chile), Raúl Ferro (Perú) and Adolfo Garcé (Uruguay) as guest speakers. The Forum was sponsored by Plataforma Democrática, Business News Americas, Bodegas San Huberto, Maizar and with the support of Café Cabrales. The panel was moderated by journalist Carlos Mira (Radio El Mundo).

At San Martín Auditorium of Bolsa de Cereales de Buenos Aires, CADAL organized the 2011 edition of Foro Latino Global, with speakers from Brazil, Chile, Peru and Uruguay to analyze the democratic governance, economic growth and social inclusion in their countries ruled by left wing democratic governments

The opening of Foro Latino Global 2011 was in charge of Gabriel C. Salvia, General Director of the Center for the Opening and Development of Latin America (CADAL).

The first speaker was Patricio Navia (Chile), who refered to the case of Concertacion de partidos para la democracia. Navia is a political scientist, assitant professor at Center for Latin American Studies at New York University (NYU) and professor of political science at Instituto de Ciencias Sociales at Universidad Diego Portales, author of the “Las grandes alamedas: El Chile post Pinochet (2004)”, co-author of “El Gobierno De Ricardo Lagos: La Nueva Vía Chilena Al Socialismo”, columnist of the newspapers La Tercera and Buenos Aires Herald, and member of CADAL's Academic Council.

Then, Raúl Ferro (Perú) focused on the Peruvian experience, including the governments of Alejandro Toledo, Alan García and the first steps of Ollanta Humala. Ferro is a journalist, Director of Business Intelligence at Business News Americas and editor of Intelligence Series and special reports. Before he served in several business and finance publications: he was director of America Economía magazine and also worked for The Andean Report in Peru, The South Pacific Mail in Chile, and the group Latin American Newsletters from London, Spanish Trends from Madrid and McGraw Hill News Services and Lagniappe Letter from New York. He is member of CADAL's Advisory Council and analyst of CADAL.

The third presentation was in charge of Adolfo Garcé (Uruguay), who analyzed the experience of Frente Amplio in Uruguay. Garcé is a political scientist, professor and researcher at Instituto de Ciencia Política de la Facultad de Ciencias Sociales at Universidad de la República. He is author of the books: “El giro republicano. Bases conceptuales del déficit democrático de América Latina (2009)”, “Donde hubo fuego. El proceso de adaptación del MLN-Tupamaros a la legalidad y a la competencia electoral 1985-2004 (2006)”. He is columnist of El Observador newspaper and member of CADAL's Academic Council.

Finally, Sérgio Fausto (Brazil), referred to the governments of Fernando Henrique Cardoso, Luis Inacio Lula da Silva and the first months of Dilma Rousseff in Brazil. Fausto is a political scientist, Executive director of Instituto Fernando Henrique Cardoso, co-director of the Project Plataforma Democrática and of the colection El Estado de la Democracia en América Latina. He is member of the Group of International Conjuncture Analysis (GACInt) from Universidade de São Paulo and columnist of O Estado de S.Paulo newpspaer. He was consultant of the Minister of Finance and Minister of Planification between 1995 and 2002, and researcher of Centro Brasileiro de Análisis y Planificación (CEBRAP). He is member of CADAL's Academic Council.

Foro Latino Global 2011 was moderated by journalist Carlos Mira (Radio El Mundo) and at the end of the presentations, the speakers answered the questions from the audience.
