Journalism and Democracy in Latin America

In Montevideo, CADAL organized the International Seminar: ''Journalism and Democracy in Latin America'', which closure was in charge of the speakers Manuel Vázquez Portal, Danilo Arbilla and Carlos Lauría. The moderator for this last panel was the journalist Nelson Fernández.

On Friday, August 17, CADAL organized in Montevideo, the International Seminar: "Journalism and Democracy in Latin America", which closure was in charge of Manuel Vázquez Portal, journalist, poet and former political prisoner of Cuba; Danilo Arbilla, former Chairman of Inter-American Press Association; and Carlos Lauría, Coordinator of the Program for the Americas at Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ). The moderator of this last panel was the journalist Nelson Fernández, Director of Subrayado, the main news show of Channel 10 in Uruguay. Also in this seminar the speakers were Fernando J. Ruiz, Professor at Universidad Austral (Argentina) and Associated Researcher of CADAL; Andrés Cañizález, Professor at Universidad Católica Andrés Bello, Venezuela; Claudio Paolillo, Director of the Weekly "Búsqueda", Uruguay, and regional Vice-chairman at IAPA; and Jorge Elías, Secretary of "La Nación" Newspaper, Buenos Aires, and researcher of IAPA.

The event was held at Four Points Montevideo by Sheraton, where the audience was more than a hundred people. The seminar had the support of El País newspaper and was covered by all major media outlets in Uruguay.

In the first panel the lecturers were Fernando Ruiz and Andrés Cañizález. Ruiz, Professor at Universidad Austral (Argentina) and Associated Researcher of CADAL, spoke on "The worst areas to exercise journalism in Latin America" and Cañizález, Professor at Universidad Católica Andrés Bello from Venezuela, on "The case of Venezuela". The opening was in charge of Christoph Korneli, Representative of Fundación Konrad Adenauer in Argentina and the panel was moderated by Gabriel C. Salvia, Chairman of the Center for the Opening and Development of Latin America.

In the second panel the debate focused on "Press freedom in Mercosur. Is Venezuela violating Mercosur's democratic clause?". The speakers were Claudio Paolillo, Director of the weekly “Búsqueda”, Uruguay, and regional Vice-Chairman of IAPA; and Jorge Elías, Secretary of “La Nación” newspaper, Buenos Aires, and researcher of IAPA. Enrique Etchevarren, Editor in Chief of El País newspaper served as moderator.

In the third panel the presentation of the book “Escrito Sin Permiso: Reportaje desde el calabozo” (Writen Without Permission: Report from Jail) took place, in charge of its author, Manuel Vázquez Portal, journalist, poet and former political prisoner in Cuba; and the conclusions by Carlos Lauría, Program Coordinator for the Americas at Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) and Danilo Arbilla, former Chairman of Inter-American Press Association. The moderator of this last panel was Nelson Fernández, Director of Subrayado, Canal 10.
