The intellectual and Brazilian political leader Fernando Henrique Cardoso met in his office of the institute in Sao Paulo the Cuban dissident Manuel Cuesta Morua.
Cardozo was twice president of Brazil between 1995 and 2002. Born in Rio de Janeiro in 1931, Cardoso is sociologist and professor emeritus at the University of Sao Paulo. He was Senator of Brazil between 1983 and 1992, Minister of Foreign Affairs in 1992 and Minister of Finance between 1993 and 1994. He is founder and honorary president of the Brazilian Social Democracy Party (PSDB). For his part, Manuel Cuesta Morua graduated in history from the University of Havana in 1986. Between 1986 and 1991 he worked in various government institutions and from 1988 to 1991 in the House of Africa in Historian Museum in Old Havana. He was expelled from that institution in 1991 for his political ideas. That same year he joined the then Social Democratic organization, Cuban Democratic Socialist Current, alternative to the regime. In 2002 he founded the “Arco Progresista”.
Cuesta Morua traveled to Sao Paulo with the support of the Center for the Opening and Development of Latin America (CADAL) to talk at the conference "How far can changes reach in Cuba?" which was organized by the Fernando Henrique Cardoso Institute (IFHC). CADAL and the IFHC are part of the democratic platform network.
Cuesta Morua’s presentation was moderated by Sergio Fausto, Super Intendant of the Fernando Henrique Cardoso Institute and Academic Director of CADAL.
The former President Cardoso attended the presentation of Cuesta Morua and provided comments at its end.
The talk hold by Cuesta Morua was also attended Ricardo Zuniga, Consul of the United States of America in Sao Paulo and one of the protagonists of the negotiating process that led to the restoration of Cuba-United States relations.
