Invited by Puente Democrático Program of the Center for the Opening and the Development of Latin America (CADAL), from 22 to 26 June, the Cuban punk rock band "Porno para Ricardo" had three shows, a conference and also interviews with the media in Buenos Aires.
Gorki Águila, Renay Kairus, Lía Villares and Ciro Díaz.
The band was founded in 1998 and is one of the main cultural models of nonconformity of some sections of the youth to the socialist state established by the Cuban revolution. Its name tries to summarize a philosophy that is prohibited in socialist Cuba, pleasure (porno) for the individual (a proper name).
The bandleader, Gorki Aguila was arrested from 2003 to 2005 as part of the strategy of the regime to silence his work and statements and then was released as a result of an international campaign, and subsequently rearrested on 25 August 2008 for being socially dangerous. Days later, he was released after paying a fine of $ 25, amid an international campaign for his release with great media coverage. Gorki Aguila is depicted in the film Havana Blues, on the new independent and underground music of Cuba.
While in Buenos Aires, the band gave three shows: at Universidad Torcuato Di Tella, Centro Cultural Munro and during Festival Antitodo held at Uniclub.
Three members of the band, Lía Villares, Gorki Aguila and Ciro Diaz participated in a conference on "Freedom of expression and ideological deviation in Cuba" held at the headquarters of CADAL and moderated by Gabriel Salvia .
