The 2014 edition of the Latin American Academic Extension Program (PLEA) has begun. This year the program will be divided into four separate, three-hour-long sessions, and will take place in the Universidad del CEMA sponsored by Konrad Adenauer Foundation. In the first session, Héctor E. Schamis, Georgetown University (United States) and Patricio Navia, New York University (United States) / Universidad Diego Portales (Chile) participated as guest lecturers.
The session began with a presentation by Héctor E. Schamis on “The De-Democratization of Latin America.”
The second class was held under the direction of Patricio Navia, who presented on “Development, Democracy and Unrest in Latin America.”
Héctor E. Schamis is adjunct professor at the Center for Latin American Studies and the Democracy and Governance program of Georgetown University and previously taught at both Brown and Cornell universities. Dr. Shamis was a Fellow at the Woodrow Wilson Center in Washington DC and visiting researcher at the University of Cambridge and the Central European University in Budapest. He’s the author of “Re-Forming the State: The Politics of Privatization in Latin America and Europe” (2002) as well as other diverse articles and essays about authoritarianism, populism, democratization and the political economy of the exchange rate in Latin America. In addition to his work as a professor and researcher, he has worked in the design and implementation of programs and workshops on corruption, privatization strategies and electoral administration in new democracies, in collaboration with governments, donors, universities and international agencies. He has published articles in “La Nacion”and “Clarin” (two newspapers from Buenos Aires), he regularly writes for “El País” (Madrid) and is also a contributor for the Club de Prensa, from NTN24, a news channel from Bogotá. Born in Argentina, he received his Ph.D. in Political Science from Columbia University. He is an Academic Advisor for the Centro para la Apertura y el Desarrollo de América Latina (CADAL).
Patricio Navia is a doctor in Political Science (New York University). He previously received a Masters in the same discipline from the University of Chicago and a Bachelor in Political Science and Sociology from the University of Illinois. He is a master teacher of Global Studies for the General Studies Program and adjunct professor for the Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies at New York University. In Chile, he is a Political Science professor for the Social Science Institute of the Universidad Diego Portales. He has written several books, among them the best seller “Las grandes alamedas. El Chile post Pinochet” (Mondadori, 2004). Additionally, is an Academic Advisor for the Centro para la Apertura y el Desarrollo de América Latina (CADAL).
