Joint Statement: Resisting China’s Occupation

As China’s leaders marks 1 October with celebrations of the founding of the People’s Republic of China; for Tibetans this is a day of resistance, and continued struggle against the Chinese Communist Party’s authoritarian rule. We, a coalition of over 145 organisations from across the world, have come together to challenge China’s propaganda and call attention to what this day truly represents for millions: decades of occupation, repression, and systematic violence.

Occupied for over seven decades, China’s rule in Tibet is one of the last remnants of 20th-century colonialism. In February 2025 Freedom House gave Tibet a global freedom score of zero out of a hundred, lower than North Korea, underscoring the catastrophic worsening of conditions caused by China’s failed policies.

Tibetans continue to be disappeared, tortured, or killed simply for speaking their truth, practicing their faith, or protecting their land. Despite these risks, monks, writers, singers, nomads, students, and countless Tibetans continue to find ways to protect their culture and challenge China’s rule, even under the watch of one of the world’s most intrusive surveillance states.

Gonpo Kyi who has tirelessly campaigned for the release of her brother, businessman Dorjee Tashi, has faced repeated harassment and violence. In August 2025, after enduring relentless surveillance and obstruction of her rights, she attempted to protest by jumping from the second floor of her brother’s hotel in Lhasa. Dorjee Tashi is currently serving a life sentence on fabricated charges, maintaining his innocence despite torture during interrogation.

Asang, a young Tibetan singer, was detained in July 2025 by Chinese authorities after posting a re-recorded version of the song “The Prince of Peace” on Chinese social media platform Kuaishou, in tribute to His Holiness the Dalai Lama in the days before his 90th birthday. Though now released, he remains barred from public performances and social media platforms.

In August 2025 Shersang Gyatso, a respected scholar monk, took his own life at his monastery in Ba county, following an intensive crackdown, including raids, searches for Dalai Lama images, and a ban on traditional religious ceremonies in the weeks preceding His Holiness the Dalai Lama’s 90th birthday.

Environmental activist Tsongon Tsering was detained in October 2024 for exposing illegal mining activities and, although now released, remains under strict surveillance. Activists such as Go Sherab Gyatso, A-Nya Sengdra, Gonpo Tsering, Namkyi, Karma Samdrup, Jampa Choephel, Rinchen Kyi, Yeshe Choedron, and Tashi Wangchuk have all faced imprisonment, intimidation or torture for peacefully defending Tibetan language, traditions, and the environment. Yet despite harsh punishments and threats to life Tibetans continue to resist and challenge China’s brutal occupation.

On this 1 October, while the Chinese regime celebrates its power and suppresses dissent, we stand unyielding with the Tibetan people in their courageous resistance.

We will not rest, we will not be silenced, and we will never stop fighting until Tibet is free.
