The Center for the Opening and Development of Latin America was distinguished by Atlas Economic Research Foundation with 2011 Francisco de Vitoria award that "honors non-profit organizations that calls the attention towards human rights and the values that sustain free societies, besides from exposing unethical practices (be it from governmental or private entities) that undermine institutions in Latin America"..
Alejandro A. Chafuen, Chairman of Atlas Economic Research Foundation gave the award to Tristán Rodríguez Loredo, member of Advisory Council of CADAL and its Program Director, Hernán Alberro.
The award bears the name of Spanish theologist and political scientist Francisco de Vitoria (1483-1546), considered to be the founder of modern international law. He gave a famous series of presentations where he established important principles of international law, defending the rights of indigenous peoples in America, and expressing his doubts on the arguments in favor of imposing Spanish imperial power over them.
