The Center for the Opening and Development of Latin America (CADAL) was created as a Foundation on February 26, 2003, has its headquarters in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and a representation in Montevideo, Uruguay. CADAL is a non partisan NGO that holds liberal democratic principles with the aim of promoting within the region, the strengthening of democracy, rule of law and the public policies that favor economic and institutional progress. With this purpose, CADAL organizes activities related to analysis, research, diffusion and training.
CADAL annually publishes the following research reports: "Index of International Commitment to Human Rights", "Economic Freedom and Transparency in Latin America", and "Press Freedom and Economic Development in Latin America"; and bi-annually the research reports: "Local Level Journalism and Democracy Indicators in Latin America", and "Latin American Trends". Besides, CADAL publishes a series of Documentos and takes part in the edition of Perspectiva Magazine through its office in Uruguay.
CADAL has already published several books such as "Another crack on the wall: Report and Testimonies on the New Cuban Press", by Fernando Ruiz; the Spanish versions of "The Sorrows of Carmencita", "Millenium Doom" and "Sweden after the Swedish Model", by Mauricio Rojas; "Corruption in Cuba and How to Fight Against It", by Ricardo Puerta; "Boitel is Alive. Rojas (Winner of the 2006 Atnony Fisher International Award); "The Chilean Experience: Consensus for Development", compiled by Gabriel Salvia and Pedro Isern; "Transitions: The Eastern European Experience", by Fredo Arias King; "Kill the Postman: Postscript of the siege to the press during the military dictatorships in the South Cone", by Jorge Elías; "The Ladies in White", by Erika Lüters Gamboa and "Kill the Postman: Postscript of the siege to the press during the military dictatorships in the South Cone", by Jorge Elías; "Ladies in White", by Erika Lüters Gamboa; and "LULA, the Left on the Divan", by Ceferino Reato.
Regarding Events, CADAL organizes Private Meetings, Books Presentations, Workshops, Conferences and International Seminars. Moreover, CADAL has a Training Area formed by the Latin American School for Political and Economical Studies (LASPES) and the Liberal Democratic Institute (LDI). The aim of LASPES is to give promising university students, and recent graduates, a complementary academic formation with a pro-democracy and pro-market Latin American view. On the other hand, LDI aims to promote a political and cultural education based on the principles of liberal democracy, the national and international commitment in defense of human rights and the search for consensus to give innovative answers to institutional, economic and social problems in every level of government.
CADAL also produces a radio show "Latin American Opening", that can be heard at FM Radio Palermo 99.5 and videos that are part of the special programs of the cable TV show "Live with Carlos Mira" at Política & Economía Channel.
CADAL is member of Red Interamericana para la Democracia (Inter-American Network for Democracy) and Network of Democracy Research Institutes. For its work, CADAL has received two international awards: "2005 Templeton Freedom Award Grant for Institute Excellence" and "2005 Francisco De Vitoria Prize for Ethics and Values".
