CADAL celebrated its 19th anniversary during the Music Freedom Day

In a hybrid event, CADAL with the support of PROVEA of Venezuela organized a tribute to the Cuban punk rock band «Porno Para Ricardo» by their Venezuelan colleagues of the punk band «Agente Extraño». In a cultural space in the city of Buenos Aires, CADAL gathered diplomats, politicians, academics and cultural referents. March 3 is the day that the Danish NGO Freemuse calls to celebrate musical freedom. The meeting was moderated by Cecilia Noce, Coordinator of CADAL’s project Defense of freedom of artistic expression.

KaribeArte: Art, Humor and Political Action - Third meeting 2021

What’s the space of humor in the Caribbean? What is it allowed to laugh about? What are the invisible borders that humor faces? What costs are paid for laughing at power? Here’s a summary of the meeting that we held together with Provea, Zona de Descargar, Freemuse, and Artists at Risk Connection to continue defending freedom of artistic expression. You will find fragments related to the theme: Art, humor and political action. We talked to artists and cultural actors who suffer harassment and persecution in their countries. We were accompanied through Cuba by the political satire magazine “Ay, qué muela!”; from Venezuela: the artists and activists Ricardo Del Bufalo, Melanio Escobar and Neisser Banout & from Colombia, the satirical news outlet, Actualidad Panamericana.

Art, creative protests and political change

CADAL together with Provea, Zona de Unloading, Freemuse, PEN Internacional for the Americas and the Caribbean organized the second KaribeArte meeting. Julio Llopiz Casal, from the 27N Movement (Cuba); Kizzy Macías, from Omni Zona Franca and the San Isidro Movement (Cuba); Úrsula Remedios y Argelia, from Comadres Púrpuras (Venezuela); Lucía Ixchiú, from Solidarity Festivals (Guatemala); and Angel Zambrano and Seymar Liscano from LAbo Público (Venezuela). The meeting was moderated by Cecilia Noce, Coordinator of the Project for the Defense of Artistic Freedom of Expression of CADAL (Argentina).

First meeting KaribeArte 2021: Art, women and authoritarian contexts

This year, together with PROVEA, we joined the Download Zone, Freemuse, PEN International for the Americas and the Caribbean and Cartooning for Peace to continue defending freedom of artistic expression. The first meeting had the participation of Katherine Bisquet, Cuban poet; Malu Valerio, Venezuelan visual artist; Dunia Orellana, Honduran screenwriter; and Rayma Suprani, Venezuelan cartoonist. We discussed with the speakers about how authoritarian contexts affect the artistic work of women, if there are specific mechanisms of violence or repression against women, among other issues.

Music Freedom Day 2021

Music Freedom Day is celebrated annually every March 3 since 2007. On this day, we celebrate the human right to musical expression with artists and organizations around the world to support the musicians who seek to exercise their right to free expression and that, even today, they cannot. From CADAL, we seek to make this celebration visible to raise awareness about the challenges that the pandemic has generated for artists around the world. Today we summon musicians from Venezuela and Cuba who, despite everything, continue to create, and we want to celebrate their tenacity with them. Limits and possibility of independent cinema - 7th International Film Festival for Human Rights

CADAL and RIALTA organized a talk with Latin American filmmakers entitled: "Limits and the possibility of independent cinema: A view from Cuba, Argentina and Brazil", within the framework of the 7th edition of the International Film Festival for Human Rights - Colombia. The filmmakers Gabriel Medina, from Argentina; Sabrina Fidalgo, from Brazil and Jose Luis Aparicio, from Cuba. The moderation was in charge of Diego Aretz.

Freedom of artistic expression: Reflections from Latin America

What is the situation of Freedom of artistic expression in the world and in Latin America? What challenges do artists and audiences face in their practice of Freedom of Artistic Expression globally? What are the trends in Latin America on Freedom of artistic expression? We are accompanied by Anamely Ramos from Cuba, Rubén Chababo from Argentina, Camila Moraes from Brazil and Arturo Duclos from Chile; all moderated by Cecilia Noce, Associate Researcher at CADAL.

Poetry and performance in resistance

The sixth and last meeting of the KaribeArte 2020 cycle, organized together with the Venezuelan Program of Education-Action in Human Rights (PROVEA) and moderated by Cecilia Noce, Associate Researcher of the CADAL project "Defense of Artistic Freedom of Expression", had as speakers Luis Eligio D 'Omni, multidisciplinary artist and activist; Amaury Pacheco, poet and activist; and Iris Ruiz, actress and activist (Cuba) and Eduardo Burguer, scriptwriter and activist; Ricardo Ramírez, teacher and writer; and Marcos Salazar, actor and activist (Venezuela).

Zombies in the Caribbean: Censorship and Film Production

The fifth meeting of the KaribeArte cycle, organized together with the Venezuelan Program of Education-Action in Human Rights (PROVEA) and moderated this time by Hernán Schell, teacher and film critic (Argentina), had as speakers Alejandro Brugués, filmmaker and director of the film “Juan de los muertos” (Cuba) and Flavio Pedota, director of the film “Infección” (Venezuela).

Rapconciencia: resistance music in the Caribbean

The fourth meeting of the KaribeArte cycle, organized together with the Venezuelan Program of Education-Action in Human Rights (PROVEA) and moderated by Cecilia Noce, Associate Researcher of the CADAL project "Defense of Artistic Freedom of Expression", had Osvaldo Navarro as speakers “Navy-Pro” (Cuba) and Ray Martínez “Free-Convict” (Venezuela).

Art and activism in the Caribbean

The third meeting of the KaribeArte cycle, organized together with the Venezuelan Program of Education-Action in Human Rights (PROVEA) and moderated by Gabriel Chwojnik, musician, composer and conductor (Argentina) was entitled “Human rights on the tables: art and activism in the Caribbean ”and had as speakers Iris Ruiz, actress (Cuba) and Mafer Abzueta, dancer (Venezuela).

Production of countercurrent events

The second meeting of the KaribeArte cycle, organized together with the Venezuelan Program of Education-Action in Human Rights (PROVEA) and moderated by Cecilia Noce, Associate Researcher of the CADAL project "Defense of the Freedom of Artistic Expression", was titled "Production of events against the current ”and had as exhibitors Michel Matos, Rotilla Festival (Cuba) and Félix Allueva, New Bands Foundation (Venezuela).

Counterculture and punk in the Caribbean

Together with the Venezuelan Program for Education-Action in Human Rights (PROVEA), the KaribeArte cycle began, which will include six days of exchange between artists from Cuba and Venezuela. This first KaribeArte meeting was titled "The commander wants to be applauded: counterculture and punk in the Caribbean", with the participation of the bands "Agent Strange" from Venezuela and "Porno Para Ricardo" from Cuba. The meeting was moderated by Cecilia Noce, Associate Researcher of the CADAL project "Defense of Freedom of Artistic Expression".

Music Freedom Day 2020

Originated in 2007, Music Freedom Day is a powerful global celebration that takes place every March 3 and commemorates the human right to artistic expression. Freemuse conceived the date so as to highlight the role and impact of art in our societies as well as to advocate universal rights of creation, performance and involvement in artistic expressions.

Exchange among Cuban artists and artistic residence project

In MUNAR, a space in the city of Buenos Aires where the link with contemporary art is promoted, an open breakfast was held among independent Cuban artists of the San Isidro Movement with the R.A.R.O. Collective that proposes a traveling artistic residence program in countries such as Argentina, Chile and Spain.

Music freedom day 2019

CADAL organized the Music Freedom Day in El Emergente with the participation of Cuban musicians, writers and performers, consecrating this activity to Maikel Castillo and Lázaro Rodríguez, two Cuban musicians arbitrarily incarcerated because they supported the campaign against decree 349.

Cultural rights and challenges to artistic freedom in Cuba

With the participation of Iris Ruiz and Amaury Pacheco, as guest speakers, a conference was held at the CADAL headquarters to analyze the state of cultural rights in Cuba especially the total censorship imposed by decree 349 on independent artists and the cultural policy included in the constitutional reform project.

With the participation of two independent Cuban artists, Luis Manuel Otero Alcántara and Yanelys Núñez Leyva, who were invited as speakers, the conference “Cuban Artists Vs. Decree No. 349: A document that legalizes censorship and discrimination” was held at CADAL’s headquarters.

Support Freemuse for the Freedom of Musical Expression

This initiative is part of the Music Freedom Day in order to celebrate the human right to freedom of musical expression. Since its inception in 2007, this celebration has been held in more than 30 countries. This year will count on, as it always has, the participation of artists and organizations from around the world to come together to defend artistic freedom.
