Repudiation of Viktor Orbán’s visit to Argentina

The Hungarian autocrat was invited to the presidential inauguration of Javier Milei. All evidence shows that Viktor Orbán not only rejects the model of liberal democracy based on respect for human rights, but is part of the autocratic wave that denies the fundamental consensus reached after World War II.

CADAL wishes to express its deep concern for the presence of Viktor Orbán at the inauguration of President Javier Milei. Throughout his campaign, Milei repeatedly expressed his commitment to liberal democracy and his decision to confront dictatorships, autocracies and authoritarianisms in all their forms. It is therefore surprising that he has extended an invitation to the Prime Minister of Hungary, unanimously categorized by specialists and the international press as an extreme right-wing populist who imposed in Hungary an authoritarian regime that he himself proudly describes as an "illiberal democracy".

Like Hugo Chávez in Venezuela, Orbán systematically attacked the media, suppressed judicial independence and sanctioned a new Constitution that disproportionately increases the power of the Executive and disregards fundamental rights of citizens. In 2018, the Orbán government was sanctioned by the European Parliament for limiting the freedoms of expression and peaceful assembly, dismissing independent judges and repressing non-governmental organizations. The critical situation of ethnic minorities should also be noted, as Orbán launched a campaign to expel Roma and Syrian refugees from the country's territory.

All the evidence shows that Viktor Orbán not only rejects the model of liberal democracy based on respect for human rights, but that he is part of the autocratic wave that denies the fundamental consensus reached after World War II. Orbán's government is not part of the free world and his presence at Milei's inauguration together with Volodimir Zelensky, a president struggling to maintain the independence of his country in the face of Vladimir Putin's invasion, is a flagrant contradiction that offends all those committed to democracy and freedom. For all of the above, CADAL repudiates Viktor Orbán's visit to Argentina and urges President Milei to keep his promise to respect and defend the open society model everywhere.
