Hauke Hartmann: «Autocracies are under increasing pressure»

In the 112th edition of Cuarto de Hora, Jorge Elias talks to Hauke Hartmann, editor of the Bertelsmann Transformation Index (BTI). Since 2004, the BTI has been analyzing political, economic and governance transformation in developing countries using 52 indicators. Hartmann notes that, in the wake of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, there is increased media attention on autocracies and the global challenges facing democracy.

CADAL and Bertelsmann Stiftung organized a virtual meeting to present the Bertelsmann Transformation Index 2020: global trends and in Latin America. The speakers were Hauke Hartmann, Senior Expert at Bertelsmann Stiftung; Peter Thiery, Regional Coordinator for Latin America and the Caribbean, Bertelsmann Transformation Index; Liliana De Riz, sociologist, professor at the University of Buenos Aires and researcher at CONICET, and Patricio Navia, political scientist, professor at New York University.

Latin America: Towards a new social contract

In the framework of the agreement that CADAL has with Bertelsmann Stiftung since 2014, and as part of the diffusion of the Bertelsmann Transformation Index (BTI), the virtual conference "Latin America: Towards a new social contract" was held. The online meeting -now available at CADAL TV- was held live through Zoom, lasted one hour, featured the presentation of four specialists, summoned more than one hundred people and offered the chance for questions from the audience.

Presentation of 2018 Bertelsmann Transformation Index

The 2018 Bertelsmann Transformation Index (BTI) was presented at the Argentine-German Chamber of Industry and Commerce as part of the 2018 Global Latino Forum. The event’s speakers included Hauke Hartmann, Liliana De Riz, Daniel Arroyo, and Marcelo Scaglione.

2018 Bertelsmann Transformation Index Presented in Montevideo

With support from the Konrad Adenauer Foundation, the Montevideo Latin American Forum was held at the University of Montevideo Business School. The event’s speakers included Senior Project Manager at the Bertelsmann Foundation Hauke Harmann; researcher and professor at UDELAR’s Political Science Institute Daniel Chasquetti; and Senior Manager at CPA Ferrere’s Economics Department Alfonso Capurro.

Presentation of the Bertelsmann Transformation Index 2014 in Montevideo

The methodology of the Transformation Index and global trends in 2014 were presented by Hauke Hartmann, Senior Project Manager at the Bertelsmann Foundation and director of the BTI project «Shaping change –strategies of development and transformation». For its part, the chapter on Uruguay of the Transformation Index 2014 was presented by Daniel Buquet, Professor and Researcher of the Institute of Politics of the Faculty of Social Sciences of Universidad de la República. This meeting of Foro Latinoamericano Montevideo was held at the Convention Center Torre de los Profesionales and was moderated by Ricardo López Göttig, Doctor in History, analyst and CADAL’s representative in Uruguay.

Contract with the Bertelsman Foundation

The contracts’s basic purpose is the translation of the Transformation Index 2014 to Spanish, which is elaborated by the Foundation Bertelsman with the cooporation of CADAL, to make the Transformation Index’s content more accesible for whole Latin America. With a path of life of 35 years, the Bertelsman Stiftung is a private, impartial foundation based in the locality Gütersloh, Germany, founded by Reinhard Mohn. The agreement was signed by Hauke Hartmann, Senior Project Manager of the Bertelsmann Stiftung, and Gabriel Salvia, president of CADAL.
